Restraining order given to man for harassing his neighbour

Stephen Johnson, a 46-year-old man from Burton-upon-Trent in Staffordshire, has been ordered to keep away from his neighbour, Crystal Barnett.

Difficulties between the two parties started after Mr Johnson put rabbit droppings and hay in the drains of Ms Barnett’s property, meaning that she was forced to complain to her landlord (Trent and Dove Housing).

The court also heard how Ms Barnett had endured Mr Johnson making pig noises when he saw her.

He even wrote to inform her employer that she was a “vulnerable” person because of his own criminal actions.

Ms Barnett told the court: “I just want this to stop.

“I do not want this man to lose his home, just to stop doing this to me – I don’t even understand why he is harassing me.”

Mr Johnson, who lives in the flat above his victim, was given a five-year restraining order banning him from contacting Ms Barnett directly, indirectly, through a third party or electronically, after being found guilty of three counts of harassment.

Magistrate Jack McGarver, who heard the case at Burton-upon-Trent Magistrates’ Court, said to the offender: “You pursued a course of conduct which was harassment.

“The incidents on their own may not have been, but all together and over a series of months it left [the victim] very distressed.”

In addition to the restraining order, Mr Johnson, who was sectioned last year and has also been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, was fined £120.

He was also ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge and £650 court costs.
