If you wish to come to the UK with the intention of carrying out construction work, you need to make sure you’re eligible to work as a skilled worker in your field before making an application.
What is a construction worker?
A construction visa is granted in the Skilled Worker visa route, which allows for sponsorship by a UK employer of individuals skilled/qualified in the field of construction.
While most construction jobs are not highly-skilled enough for general sponsorship, many are included in the immigration salary list or temporary shortage list, which were previously known as shortage occupations. Inclusion on these lists enables employers to sponsor workers in job codes at RQF 3-5: below degree-level.
Essentially, the construction worker visa offers long-term permission to live and work in the UK, bring your family members and ultimately qualify for indefinite leave to remain on the basis of ability in the field of construction.
Who is eligible for a construction visa?
For UK-based construction work, the primary visa route is the Skilled Worker visa. This visa type requires that you have a job offer from an approved sponsor, which meets minimum salary requirements.
Minimum salary requirements vary based on whether or not your specific role is on the ‘immigration salary list (ISL)’. The general salary threshold on this visa type is £41,700, though many specific roles and trades in the construction sector actually fall on the ISL as shortage roles.
For example, as a bricklayer, stonemason, carpenter, joiner, roofer and many more professions, the salary threshold your sponsor is required to meet is only £33,400, or the ‘going rate’ for that role.
Key requirements of this visa
- Minimum salary threshold of £41,700 per year (lower for certain high-shortage trades).
- The role must have an RQF Level 6 skill level.
- Since January 8 2026, applicants must prove an English proficiency level of at least B2.
- Applicants must provide a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from their employer.
- Applicants may bring both their partners and children, but they must meet maintenance requirements.
Note that you are eligible to change employers or extend your visa, but the same requirements that applied to your initial visa still apply. Following the five-year visa period, you may apply for permanent residency (indefinite leave to remain) status.

For applications made from outside the UK, it may take around three weeks to receive a decision. From inside the UK, it may be around eight weeks, but processing times can vary massively depending on your circumstances and the volume of applications.
You can also pay an additional £750 for the priority application service, ensuring a quicker decision.
How long does a skilled worker visa last for a construction worker?
A skilled worker visa covering construction roles can last for up to five years, with the opportunity to extend or seek permanent settlement after these five years.
Can you bring family members with you as a worker on a skilled construction worker visa?
That depends on which shortage list your occupation appears on. Generally, skilled workers can bring partners and children under 18, but those filling roles on the temporary shortage list are not permitted to bring dependents.
Can you extend a Construction Worker Visa?
You can extend your construction worker visa, assuming you meet the requirements to do so. This typically means you continue to meet all relevant requirements and can acquire a certificate of sponsorship from the same employer.
This visa type can lead to settlement after five years, but note that the government is currently consulting on longer settlement periods of 10 years for skilled workers.
