Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle have applied to trade mark “hundreds of items” under the ‘Sussex Royal’ branding, reports have revealed.
According to the application filed with the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) on 21 June, the trade mark will cover a range of “goods and services”, including magazines, calendars, posters, greeting cards and clothing.
The brand is currently used by the royals’ charitable foundation, Sussex Royal, which split from the decade-old Royal Foundation run by sibling Prince William and wife Kate in June last year.
The division saw Prince Harry pursue independent charitable interests to his brother after reports suggested a “rift” between the siblings.
Both charitable foundations have now applied to trade mark new products, services, and branding with Prince William successfully trade marking the “Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge” as of 27 September 2019.
The Sussex Royal trade mark, meanwhile, is still pending approval as of 08 January 2020.
Reports suggest that the royal couple could be applying to trade mark the branding in anticipation of launching new charities, such as social care services and teaching materials.
Commenting on the division of the Royal Foundation in June, a Kensington Palace spokesperson said: “These changes are designed to best complement the work and responsibilities of Their Royal Highnesses as they prepare for their future roles, and to better align their charitable activity with their new households.”
