UK actor Sean Connery has reportedly trademarked his own name in a bid to prevent businesses and merchandisers from using it on James Bond-inspired products.
According to reports, the Scottish-born actor has filed documents with the European Intellectual Property Office to prevent others from using his name in relation to gift cards, clothing, mugs, books and more without first seeking his permission.
The restrictions also cover any cocktail shakers, drinking glasses and bottle openers inspired by the James Bond film series – and the actor has reportedly taken similar steps to protect his name in the US.
Sean Connery is the latest in a long line of celebrities to trademark his own name in a bid to prevent businesses from using it to make money.
Other celebrities who have previously taken similar steps include footballer David Beckham, American rapper 50 Cent and Beatles’ legend John Lennon.
Back in September, Mr Lemonade Alternative Drinks Ltd – the London-based company behind ‘John Lemon’ lemonade – found itself embroiled in an intellectual property (IP) dispute with the late musician’s former partner, Yoko Ono.
In a heated and long-running dispute, the company was accused of “abusing and misusing” the musician’s name to sell its soft drinks and was later forced to change the name of its products.
