Government publishes new public health guidance for pubs, restaurants, and hairdressers

The Government has now published “practical guidelines” to help the hotel and hospitality industry prepare to reopen from next month.

The new guidance, created in collaboration with key industry stakeholders, outlines the basic preparations and measures pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and accommodation businesses should take to ensure the safety of staff and customers.

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that some industries would be allowed to reopen from 04 July 2020 as the pace of the spread of the coronavirus slows.

The new guidelines for pubs and restaurants include requiring the use of table service where possible, encouraging contactless ordering, discouraging “non-essential” trips by staff within venues and to communicate via radio where possible, encouraging customers to use hand washing facilities, and providing clear guidance on social distancing rules.

New guidance for hairdressers, meanwhile, states that a “clear visor” should be worn by the person providing the service at all times.

Commenting on the document, Business Secretary Alok Sharma said: “We know this pandemic has been particularly hard for people working in hairdressing and hospitality. Allowing pubs, restaurants and hairdressers to open will be another step in our plan to kickstart our economic recovery in a safe manner.

“The guidance we have set out provides clear, practical steps businesses can take to open in a way that is as safe as possible for workers and customers.”
