Golfer sues club after hitting hole-in-one to win £14k car, then being offered ‘lesser model’

A golfer who thought he’d won a brand new car after hitting a hole-in-one at a Cambridge golf club has found himself locked in a legal battle, after the club offered him a ‘lesser model’.

Jake Warner, 24, thought he’d won a £14k Vauxhall Corsa last June, when he aced a challenge advertised “win this car if you get a hole in one” at Haverhill Golf Club in Cambridge.

In joyous celebration, Mr Warner posed for a picture with the brand new, high-spec Corsa parked up on the club’s green.

However, when Mr Warner visited an allocated Vauxhall dealership to claim his prize, the Corsa he was offered turned out to be a pre-registered one litre base model – estimated to be worth just £6,500.

“It was a far lesser car, and it wasn’t new,” he said.

“I was forced to take legal action.”

Mr Warner initially lost his case at Cambridge County Court, but the golf club and its insurance company made him a ‘generous offer’ of a Vauxhall Viva worth £8,300 and an out-of-court settlement of £7,500, which Mr Warner reportedly accepted.

Haverhill Golf Club issued a statement following the incident claiming that it “never denied” that Mr Warner had won a car and was “fully vindicated” by the court’s decision to throw out Mr Warner’s claim.
