How is online shopping impacting the construction sector?

The online shopping sector seems to be experiencing exponential growth, as more people opt to shop from the comfort of their own homes.

From the pandemic making online shopping more vital, online retail giants, such as Amazon, are still yielding more sales than ever; therefore, it is no surprise that this demand is seeping through to the construction sector.

In 2021, the number of construction projects for warehouses soared, with the warehouse and logistics industry hitting a record high of £5.59 billion, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

This is equivalent to an increase of over 150 per cent when compared with the value of the industry in 2020, which was £2.29 billion.

Whilst this increase in demand comes as great news for the industry, bigger projects pose the challenge of more chances for regulations to be neglected.

How can you comply with regulations?

With more and more projects to take on, some may think that cutting corners would be the most time-effective way to complete projects.

However, being compliant with construction regulations is fundamental.

Higher demand for services may make it necessary to hire more staff, which comes with the burden of ensuring that everyone is compliant with health and safety regulations.

Whilst there may be more costs associated with buying more protective equipment, failure to properly protect workers can have a disastrous outcome.

Another consideration is the quality of the building project, construction companies must consider how they could improve their efficiency to meet this heightened demand, without sacrificing the quality and safety of buildings.
